Artistic Refinement
Artistic Refinement
We've spent much of these few weeks of development time making sure that the actual mechanical aspects of the game can work, due to our lack of experience with coding, with a basic version of the gameplay ready, this week we decided to focus on some ancillary aspects of the game, like the art.
With that, to the right you can see some previews of coloured sprites as they will appear in the game. We will continue working hard on all the remaining sprites, as currently much of the first room is complete in terms of art and mechanics, with the incomplete work in relation to sound design and refining some art elements and UI. This does not include the main menu or opening cutscenes or dialogue however, as they require some additional skills and work, and are not necessary for the prototype showcasing that will be done in a few weeks.
As for additional details, much of the work has been focused around the art, however, as seen in the devlog last week, we have also begun implementing some of the art into our prototype to prepare for showcasing. Furthermore, we wanted to discuss some of the inspirations surrounding different aspects of the art in our game.
The actual designs of characters taking notes from Ancient Chinese warriors, or sprites being inspired by martial arts media, which you can see some examples of to the right, as well as below.
Our basic enemy's sprite for being attacked from a low angle (such as being kicked or kneed) on the right, with its inspiration on the left.
Our basic enemy's design on the right, taking design cues and elements from the soldier on the left.
We are currently heading towards the fifth week of development, which means we are approaching the halfway point of the project; most of what we are planned next is centred on smoothing out the kinks in the prototype in order to gather some critical feedback. We hope you're as enthusiastic as we are about the work we've achieved so far, and we can't wait to show you more as we continue to develop our ideas.
Thank you from all of us at The Mishir Corporation!
